How We Do It - Zero Waste to Landfill

How We Do It - Zero Waste to Landfill

Triple A Containers, Inc. is a company that embodies the concept of Servanthood. It is a culture that promotes serving each other's needs, volunteering in the community, and generally putting others needs in front of your own.

It is within the Servanthood umbrella that we should strive to put the needs of the environment ahead of our own. We therefore have adopted the "Ricoh Zero Waste to Landfill" system of being a steward to our environment.

By adopting the Ricoh process, we will accomplish three main objectives:

  1. Assure to ourselves and our auditors that nothing purchased, used, or bought from home will end up in a landfill.
  2. Lower the cost of operating our facility by reducing utilities, reusing some components necessary in the production of our finished product and recycling for value every potential waste stream.
  3. Train our employees to put into their daily lives the Ricoh concept of 5R: Refuse, Return, Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle. Our ultimate objective with our employees is that they will incorporate these practices into their lives at home as well as at work.

The Zero Waste to Landfill (ZWTL) system is monitored monthly by our Vital Factor process and audited quarterly by our conformance manager. We will also have a Bi-Annual celebration to share the achievements of our recycling process.

Zero Waste to Landfill Participation

Objective

Discontinue sending waste to landfills by September 2005

Benchmarking

Triple A Containers is honored to partner with Ricoh embracing and following their conscientious efforts to eliminate waste to the landfill and contribute to a healthier environment.

Project Plan

Build upon the beginning structure already in place in the sorting and recycling of aluminum cans and plastic bottles and the baling and recycling of corrugated and paper. In April of 2005 we introduced the recycle bin for collecting ink and toner cartridges. The Collection and donation of these cartridges are being donated to the "Recycle for Education" project which will benefit the public education system by $1.00 per donated cartridge. Establish additional bins for the collection and recycling of metal, rubber, foam, plastic, and wood. Establish bin to collect waste for incinerating.

Training & Promotion

Reason for embracing "Zero Waste to Landfill" project is to follow the lead of Ricoh and demonstrate our commitment to becoming environmentally friendly and raise the conscious awareness of our employees to the need to reduce waste. Introduction concept at April 2005 town hall meeting with the introduction of ink and toner cartridge recycle bin. Meetings with employees have taken place to introduce the concept of recycling. Established "Ricoh Zero to Landfill Reporting Participation Grid" for machine centers. Two machine centers per month will report on recycling progress at the town hall meetings. Scheduled "Ricoh Zero to Landfill" celebration days to recognize and promote participation in program in January and July 2006. Established a Triple A recycle logo which will be printed on timbers which will be given to each employee as part of promotion efforts.

Use of 5R Concept

Adopting the Ricoh concept of 5R's to expand the knowledge of our employees in recognizing waste and engaging in reducing waste through

Refuse Avoid buying anything that becomes waste
Return packaging materials to suppliers
Reduce waste at the source
Reuse everything possible
Recycle any remaining waste streams
Verification

Plan to establish a monitor and measure process to determine success of project

Continuous Improvement

Plan to set goals to incorporate other areas of improving use of time, energy and resources. Promote concept with our critical suppliers and customers. Strive to reach 100% participation with our company and family.

Triple A Containers, Inc. is an ISO 9001 Certified manufacturer who produces ROHS compliant packaging. We maintain these stringent standards to ensure that your needs are met.

We recycle to preserve our Earth

Recycling can have a great effect on our Earth. When we recycle we don't consume valuable resources, nor do we over exceed our landfills capacity.

Here are some examples of what a huge impact our efforts to recycle can make:

  • A 60-watt light bulb can be run for over a day on the amount of energy saved by recycling 1 pound of steel. In one year in the United States the recycling of steel saves enough energy to heat and light 18.000.000 homes.
  • If all our newspaper was recycled, we could save about 250.000.000 trees each year. Using recycled paper instead of new paper, you save 35% of water pollution and 70% of air pollution used in making new paper.
  • The energy saved from recycling one glass bottle can run a 100-watt light bulb for four hours. It also causes 20% less air pollution and 50% less water pollution than when a new bottle is made from raw materials.
  • In a lifetime, the average American will throw away 600 times his or her adult weight in garbage. This means that each adult will leave a legacy of 90.000 lbs. of trash for his or her children.
